is it safe to do star trails for a canon 550d?..and what would be the ideal settings to do star trails?

Yes, it is safe. (What were you concerned about?) Anyway, you should take at least an hour’s worth of 30-second exposures. (shoot longer for fuller star trails) This procedure gives you way cleaner results than shooting one very long exposure. Combine the images with Photoshop or with the “Startrails” application that can be found here: http://www.startrails.de/html/software.html
